ON Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat pioneering legend, Fela, celebrated his 40th birthday at the New Afrika Shrine, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos. It offered the artistand guests moments to also reflect on his milestone achievements since inheriting Fela’s Egypt 80 band after Abami Eda (the one who carries death in a pouch) passed on in 1997. The event also marked the celebration of his 32 years on stage since he began performing at the tender age of 8. The event’s theme simply asked guests to ‘Come Dressed Regally as the Gods and Goddesses that they are!’

Guests were treated to Afrobeat sounds and amazing performances, spectacular bottle services, and the best selection of champagnes, spirits, and cognac. Dignitaries and friends from many spheres of life attended the event to honour the Afrobeat star. These included Nigerian celebrities such as star actress, Funke Akindele, media mogul, Sony Irabor, ace comedian, Bovi (Ugbomah), among others.

After Fela passed on in 1997, Seun Kuti, just 14 years old, assumed leadership of Egypt 80 band. While still in school, Seun had to choose between a career in music and one in American Football for which he has an talent. Egypt 80 band under him released an album titled Many Things in 2008.
